Engagements built around your actual situation

We offer three core service lines, each designed to address a different stage of organisational challenge — and each adaptable to the scale and sector of your business.

Strategy consulting that names the real problem

Most strategy work fails because it addresses the stated problem, not the actual one.

Our strategy engagements begin with a structured diagnostic phase — typically two to four weeks — in which we interview key stakeholders, analyse financial and operational data, and map the competitive environment as it actually is in Uganda, not as it appears in sector reports written for a different audience. The output is a Strategy Clarity Document: a concise, prioritised account of what your organisation needs to do over the next twelve to thirty-six months, why those priorities hold, and what must be true for each to succeed. We then offer facilitated planning sessions to translate the document into quarterly execution roadmaps owned by your internal team.

Our service lines

Each service line has a defined scope, a defined output, and a defined handover point so you always know what you are buying.

Strategic Clarity Audit

A three-to-six-week engagement that produces a written diagnosis of your competitive position, strategic options, and recommended priorities. Suitable for organisations facing a decision inflection point — a new market, a funding round, a leadership transition, or a performance plateau.

Operations Improvement Programme

A structured eight-to-twelve-week programme to redesign the processes, roles, and reporting systems that most directly affect your delivery capacity. Ends with a documented Operating Model and a ninety-day implementation sprint plan with clear accountability for each workstream.

Transformation Advisory

Ongoing advisory support — typically six to eighteen months — for organisations undertaking large-scale change. We provide programme architecture, governance design, stakeholder facilitation, and periodic progress reviews. Engagement intensity can be scaled as the transformation matures.

Board and Leadership Advisory

Retainer-based advisory access for boards and senior leadership teams. Includes monthly strategy reviews, on-call input for high-stakes decisions, and facilitation of annual strategic planning retreats — structured around your financial year, not a generic calendar.

“Northern Hartwell ran our Operations Improvement Programme over ten weeks. By the end, our production planning cycle had shortened from three weeks to four days, and we finally had a reporting dashboard our factory managers actually used. The change stuck — that's the part most consultants miss.”

Common questions about working with us

Straightforward answers to the things clients typically want to know before they commit.

How long does a typical engagement last?

It depends on the service line. A Strategic Clarity Audit runs three to six weeks. An Operations Improvement Programme runs eight to twelve weeks. Transformation Advisory and Board Advisory are ongoing, typically running six months to two years. We scope every engagement at the outset and put the timeline in writing.

Do you work outside Masaka?

Yes. While our office and much of our client base is in the Masaka region, we have delivered engagements in Kampala, Mbarara, Jinja, and Gulu. For projects requiring sustained on-site presence outside Masaka, we build travel into the engagement budget transparently.

What size of organisation do you typically work with?

Our clients range from owner-managed businesses with twenty staff to cooperatives and NGO-commercial hybrids with several hundred employees. We do not work with very early-stage startups — our methods work best when there is an existing organisation with real operational data to analyse.

How do you charge for your services?

We price engagements on a fixed-fee basis wherever scope allows. For ongoing advisory retainers, we use a monthly fee structure. We do not charge by the hour — we find it misaligns incentives. Fees are quoted in Ugandan Shillings and denominated in UGX.
