Sector experience that sharpens every engagement

We bring accumulated knowledge from Uganda's most economically significant sectors, so your team does not spend the first month educating us.

Why sector knowledge changes the quality of advice

Generic strategy frameworks are starting points — sector experience is what makes them specific enough to act on.

A restructuring recommendation for an agricultural cooperative requires different assumptions than one for an urban retailer. Seasonal cash flow, crop-cycle risk, cooperative governance structures, and relationships with the National Agricultural Advisory Services all shape what is viable. Northern Hartwell has built deep familiarity in a defined set of sectors — not because we refuse to step outside them, but because that depth is what allows us to challenge assumptions rather than simply accept them. When we enter an engagement in one of our core sectors, we arrive with relevant benchmarks, known failure modes, and a network of practitioners to draw on.

Sectors where we have the deepest experience

Each represents at least four completed engagements and a working knowledge of the regulatory and market environment.

Montage of Ugandan business sectors: agribusiness, retail, health, and logistics

Agriculture and Agribusiness

From smallholder cooperative restructuring to export-oriented processing operations, we have worked across the Ugandan agricultural value chain. We understand seasonal financing, post-harvest loss dynamics, and the operational pressures of managing large seasonal workforces under variable weather conditions.

Wholesale and Retail Trade

Uganda's trading sector is large, fragmented, and often family-run. We have helped wholesale and retail clients build inventory management discipline, define viable expansion paths, and formalise governance structures that survive a leadership transition without losing institutional knowledge.

Health and Social Services

We work with private clinics, faith-based hospitals, and NGO health programmes to improve operational efficiency without compromising care quality. Our work in this sector focuses on resource allocation, staff productivity frameworks, and financial sustainability planning.

Logistics and Supply Chain

Infrastructure constraints in Uganda make logistics strategy genuinely complex. We help distribution businesses and supply chain operators map their actual cost structures, identify the bottlenecks that most reduce reliability, and design routing and scheduling systems that are robust to road and fuel variability.

“I was sceptical that any consultancy could understand the specifics of a cooperative with 1,400 member farmers. Northern Hartwell surprised me — they had read the right literature, they asked the right questions about NAADS relationships, and they never once proposed a solution designed for a different context. Their final report was the most useful document we produced in 2023.”

Adjacent sectors we support on a selective basis

Beyond our core four, we take a small number of engagements each year in adjacent areas where our methods transfer well.

Financial services — particularly SACCOs and microfinance institutions — share governance and operational challenges with our cooperative clients, and we have completed engagements in this space. Education management, particularly private secondary schools and vocational training institutions navigating growth, is another area where our operational redesign work has proved effective. We are selective because sector naivety costs clients time. If your sector is not listed here, the right first step is a conversation — we will be honest about whether we are the right fit.
