Northern Hartwell

Clarity is the first competitive advantage

Northern Hartwell helps leadership teams in Uganda define direction, align operations, and make decisions that hold up under real conditions.

We make strategy legible — and executable

Too many plans sit in drawers. We build ones that move people and resources in the same direction.

Northern Hartwell was founded in Masaka with a single conviction: good strategy should be comprehensible to every person responsible for carrying it out. We work with founders, boards, and senior managers across Uganda to diagnose the real constraints in their organisations, construct a clear strategic response, and stay involved long enough to see it take hold. Our engagements range from focused three-week diagnostic sprints to multi-quarter transformation programmes, and every one is anchored in the specific context of the client — not a borrowed framework from another continent.

Three things we do unusually well

Each reflects a deliberate choice about where to focus and where to say no.

Strategic Diagnosis

Before recommending anything, we spend time understanding what is actually happening in your organisation — not what the org chart says. We interview teams, audit processes, and map decision flows to surface the constraints that are genuinely limiting growth or efficiency.

Operational Redesign

We translate strategic intent into operational reality. That means redefining roles, redesigning workflows, and setting up the monitoring systems that let managers catch drift early — before a minor misalignment becomes a costly detour.

Transformation Programmes

When an organisation needs structural change — a new business model, a merger integration, or a market pivot — we provide the programme architecture and the hands-on facilitation to move through the transition without losing the people who make the institution work.

“The Northern Hartwell team spent six weeks with our Masaka cooperative before writing a single recommendation. When the strategy document arrived, every department head recognised their own challenges in it. Implementation began within a fortnight — that's rare.”

Rooted in Uganda's business landscape

Context is not a footnote — it is the foundation of every recommendation we make.

Uganda's economy is not a generic emerging market. It has its own capital constraints, regulatory rhythms, infrastructure realities, and talent dynamics. Northern Hartwell has built its practice around that specificity. Our consultants have worked inside Ugandan agricultural cooperatives, urban retail chains, NGO-commercial hybrids, and export-oriented manufacturers. We know what a strategy needs to account for when roads flood in April, when mobile money is the primary payment rail, and when a family ownership structure means decisions travel differently than a textbook assumes. That knowledge does not come from a desk in London — it comes from working here, in the warm terracotta-and-cream texture of this particular place.
